HPOP Questions!

What does a HPOP that cant keep up sound like? Does it sound like a squeaking sound in the front of the engine? I am only hearing it when I am WOT for a bit in the hotter tunes on my chip. Is it emptying the resivior and cant get refilled in time? Wouldnt this apply down to the engine oil pump or something? I just replaced the pump. If the problem still lies in the low pressure oil system, what can cause it not to keep up? I have 15PSI at idle when warmed up, and I am somewhere in the 45-55 PSI range at WOT. Does this seem right?

Also, I am noticing a bad shudder or vibration when the truck isnt fully warmed up.It only happens in the 3rd and 4th gears though. It almost sounds like a cylinder is out when I step on the throttle, but once I build good boost for about 1000 feet a couple of times, then the shudder stops, and the engine clears up. Whats your take on these problems guys? Thanks!!!

hpop not keeping up doesnt make a sound to my knowledge. you get a cel and the truck just falls on its face on the top end.

So, the light squeaking or squealing sound might not even be engine related? Could it be something with the engine oil pressure? might be something like ball joints or something?


What about the shudder or vibration?

Katie's dually made noises and shuddered and vibrated.

Had to do with different sized tires, stacked lift blocks, no carrier bearing shim, etc...

The noises were tune related...

the noises your describing could also be the belt or tensioner pully as well

Its only when I am in the throttle alot. I am trying to diag. the HPOP to see if mines bad. I really wanna find a 17* HPOP. I know a good one of them will be sufficiant for me. A reman one from an online site is around $400.00. Does that seem like a good price?

Your HPOP won't sound like anything. What's happening is your chip is asking for more HPO than your pump can put out. If you want to solve the problem you can run dual HPOP'S or go to single shot injectors, which is going to take a big bite out of your budget.

pump doesnt make any noise at all, probably belt ,pulley , tensioner etc.

vibration could be an injector dropping out, which i still dont think is oil pressure related

did you ever run a fuel pressure test under load on this truck?

If you have an injector dropping out there will also be a popping and snapping sound that is audible from you exhaust as well as a shuddering feeling. Kind of reminiscent of a gasser pinging. When I had this happen to me I just about dropped a load in my pants. I thought I blew the darn engine.

Nah, its def. not an injector dropping out. I dont hear those symptoms. Just sounds like the truck has a slight "miss".

Yeah Scott, I did, and it came up 52 PSI, Then I did the BB mod. I have a FP guage that will be here next week, then I will have a constant monitor on the pressure. Maybe its just normal. I dont see any other problems with the truck. seems like I have all the other stuff worked out. I havent thrown any CEL codes lately either. So I think I have my boost annihilator adjusted correctly now.
