AFE Intake

Lately I've noticed there have been quite a few threads on AFE Intakes causing 6.0's to display the "service engine" light because the computer is not used to the new amount of air, or velocity of air through the intake.

Just wondering if anyone has had this same problem or any like it with the 7.3's. I'm thinkin of getting an AFE Stage 2 and was just wondering if this was anything I'd need to worry about. Hopefully not because I'd like to eventually pick up a programmer and such, but I definatley want to have a good intake before I do that to keep things running smooth.

Well, I just installed a Stage II on my 96 7.3 last night and drove it today without the CEL ever coming on.

In the past week, besides the intake, I installed a 4" exhaust & bumped my Edge Evolution up from "Tow" to "Race" with no problems. Don't think I'll go from "Race" to "Extreme" until I get the pyrometer & tranny temp gauges installed!

man....running a programmer/chip without a pyrometer would make me reaaaaaaaaal nervous. I'm a little nervous about running one at all....even with gauges. I suppose I'd be ok if your goin easy on it though...hopefully

Before I did the exhaust, I only kept the Edge in "Tow". I wouldn't even consider anything higher without at least a new downpipe. Now that I have the pipe in, I'm not too worried about bumping it up one level. No way in Hades will I go higher though until the gauges are in. I'm not drag racing the truck and given that it's 32 degrees and snowing right now, I doubt I'll be dogging it too much for the next 5 months, unless I suddenly develop a death wish involving icy roads!!!

Running a tuner on a "tame" setting shouldn't do any harm to your rig. Just resist temptation until you have things in order!

yeah, speakin of icy roads....this truck is a WHOLE different beast compared to the 1/2 ton gasser I had before.
It's got so much torque and is so heavy that if I'm going up a hill and just TOUCH an icy spot I d@#$ near end up backwards. I put like 400-500 lbs in the back and am thinking of putting more.
I hit black ice w/ my last truck and bit it pretty good so I'm a little leary of the slippery stuff these days

About the programmer and gauges, I'm sure your right. Running it that low in that cold temps would probably be ok, but I know I'd have a hard time keepin my hands away from that Performace Mode setting

I know my dad has one on his 2000 7.3 and has not had any problems with it. He upgraded from a stage 1 and noticed a big difference.

Well my other debate is Stage I or Stage II.....
I'm leaning towards just doing it right and going Stage II, but it's almost double the price...from 250ish (stage I) to 450ish (stage II).

Keep your eye on Ebay for that Stage II. I got mine there for $255 incl. shipping. He doesn't have any for your truck listed right now but he does on occasion.
