What info does your computer keep about your truck?

Im looking at a 99 psd to buy but the truck looks a little rougher than the odometer says. Im wondering if the guy turned the #'s back some how, then I thought maybe the computer would have accurate vehicle info on it. If I took it to a dealership and had them scan could they tell me stuff like that? Possibly if it also had a programer on it or anything else? Does anyone know about what the computer can tell me about the truck? Thanks Tom

Not much other then giving you some info on any possible codes. Carfax is a good place to possibly find the current mileage. I think there is a 10 year law and if the truck has changed hands the mileage has to be reported. As far as a programmer goes if the truck has been run for so many miles without a chip or tuner then they would have to look at the pistons to tell if it had one or not. What are some of the mods on the truck now?

You can tell if there has ever been a chip in it if you pull the PCM and see if the PCM has been cleaned to accept a chip.

I just found the computer in the fender well, That's the right one right? It has writing on it like its from a junk yard (good comp.) The truck runs fine I assume its the right one if its not the stock one. It doesn't look like its been apart, Is there any way to scan it and find out if its the stock one or the right one for the truck? Other mods are just K&N and 4'' straight pipe and a boost guage truck only hits 19#s everthing else is stock. Thanks Tom

The computer is under the dash by your pedals in a black plastic case, and no there really isnt a way they can scan it to see if it has been chipped, but become a premium member and they can run an oasis for ya and you can get some history of the truck

There is a digit of the vin number that should be the PCM Number. But the problem is that many trucks used the same pcm code. So trying to see if the pcm has been replaced would be hard to tell.

Also for the mileage to be rolled back, well that is a federal crime. Another thing if the pcm is not the original and came from a different truck. Well if the pcm was not flashed with the info for the new truck that would tell you something.

When I had a 95 F-150 I had the pcm replaced. When they did the replacement of the pcm. The dealership had to flash the pcm to enter my current mileage and all that info for the truck to make it legal.

But I don't know if that is the case for you. I would suggest a car fax report and become a premium member and request an oasis report as well.
