Exclamation Urgent...'01 Ex broke down roadside

So I'm in the 'Stan and my wife and 3 kids are broke down on the side of the road. Got the truck towed to a local shop.
Not a lot I can do but try and get the mechanic (who I never met and it stresses me out) some good info...no idea if he knows his way around a 7.3L.

Wife says she fired it up after church and it made a slight funny knock sound and quit. Then, as she drove it home, the knock got worse, she lost power while the motor still ran, she couldn't accelerate, and limped it over to the roadside. I think she tried to start it again and couldn't but not sure about that part.

Is this possibly the crank position sensor I've often heard about in the past?
Sure hope it is...
Any solid advice would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

When I've had a CPS go out, it started by randomly dying, never would loose power. Just randomly cut out.

Well thank God my wife got taken care of. My pastor recommended a good mechanic to her and she had it towed there. popped codes for a CPS and he swapped it out and it's running good again. $150 or so.

I'll be keeping one in the glove box for a rainy day.

The exhaust back pressure sensor caused my pickup to have the same symptoms.
