What to look out for when buying used?

I am getting ready to buy my first used diesel and need to know what to look out for. I am looking at the 7.3L models with over 150,000 miles to get something under $15,000. With that in mind, what advice can you give me? How much life is left in one of these rigs? What are the tell-tale signs to know if I should pass on it or not?

Thanks for your help.

What about trucks with 200-250 thousand miles on them? Is there still life in them?

Thanks for the welcome.

See if you can get the VIN. If you become a premium member here we can get an OASIS report. It is a list of all the work Ford has done under warranty on the truck

The 7.3 is a proven motor. There are a few members here that can tell you they have driven a million miles with no major problems as long as they are maintained well. And yes 200-250k on a PSD isn't much but, how I see it, its 250k miles that someone else put on it. You have no idea how they ran it or maintained it. I've seen plenty of 99.5-2002 with just under 100k within that price range you mentioned earlier. When your at the dealer have them print you out an OASIS with the full record, it will show all the work that Ford has ever done on that particular rig, and its free. If they give you any guff on doing one I would find another dealer. Just my 2 cents. Happy hunting!
