Check Engine light comes on when I put the hammer down

I was on the highway Friday and after getting past some construction slow-down, I gave it most of the pedal and took it from 45 to 75-80mph pretty quick. I noticed it was blowing a lot smoke, then saw that the check engine light was on. This happened once before (about 3 or 4 months ago) after an extended acceleration, and both times the light went off after about 10mins of driving at 70-75mph. What might cause the light to show up, then off like this? My understanding was that it took a certain number of starts to clear the codes, but in this case it went off only minutes after coming on. Any ideas?

I don't have any gauges.

I'm still learning about mods and I'm not really sure what I've got. I bought the truck used, and there is a superchip installed under the dash. It has XLE8 hand-written on it, but from what I've read the XLE8 was for '99 models. Additionaly, there was no controller with the truck when I bought it. Do you need to have the controller plugged in order for the module to work?

I figure I should just go ahead and run the codes anyway. Will they still show up if I try to read them after the check engine light has gone off?

The light will come on when you typically have a chip or tuner and you get the boost levels above stock boost levels. You are not hurting anything; it is just going to de-fuel to keep you (in Fords terms) in the safe zone and in turn set the light and it will go off in a mile or so. I have a "Boost Annihlator" from ITP. Your MAP sensor is what sees the boost that causes the light and this device goes inline to your MAP sensor and prevents the sensor from seeing any boost levels above 22psi or you can adjust it therefore no more engine light. It works well!

If it took 10 minutes to go off, it was more than likely the 1211 icp high/low code. the XLE8 is for the 99 auto, so the chip was more than likely reburned for the new truck.
