Charging Question

They there just getting my 99 E350 shuttle bus up and running. I have two newish batteries for it, from other vehicles that used the same size batteries about a year old for each.

My question is, when I shut it down it does not like the start right away sometimes I have to crank it a few times or it starts to slowly crank.

Now I have two batteries and I think it requires two right? My buddies 01 f250 PSD has two, for my vehicle. One is under the hood the other is near the side doors in the back.

When running I am getting charging voltage out of the front battery (13.5 volts) but the back one is just battery 12.8 volts.

If its not charging is it safe to assume its not helping to start the vehicle?

What color wire should be going to the second battery (or the first) that charges it sorry to ask but it is ****ing surprisingly cramped in the engine compartment so if I can just get the answer rather then pulling stuff apart just to find that wire it would be useful thanks again!

Expect more posts as I drive this beast more regularly. And get all the kinks sorted out (been sitting for about 18 months and had hand controls and such installed.
