Idle

I have a 2000 Excursion with over 260,000 miles. We show dogs so on many occasions when the dogs had to be left in the vehicle we let it idle for hours. Heat in the winter and AC in the summer. Knock on wood...never any problems with oil consumption, loss of power etc. Maybe I have just been lucky...

My work truck has 193K miles on it. It has spent 3/4 of its life idling and I have not had a problem with it. I'm not saying that nothing will happen just saying in my case nothing has.

I am not quite sure of the year myself..but if it is cold enought the computer automatically bumps idle to 1000 rpms.

05 and newer no longer an "aux idle module"...not sure about Alan's high idle mod (haven't read thread yet), but those years and newer had high idle built into the PCM...you have to send 12v to a wire under the dash (I used one of my factory upfitter switches) and it bumps RPMs to 1200, and higher (upto 2400 RPMs if voltage drops. Ford called it Battery Charge Protection, not high idle. Should be a purple/light green wire up behind the fuse box under driver's dash.

Here is the link I used, the first page towards the bottom, BCPSW:

Probably won't help you 7.3 rigs....but I figure I would throw it out there.

Tiff.. the 1000 RPM idle you experienced this morning is natural... It is programmed into the computer to help the engine warm up a little faster.

As for a high idle mod.... I have continuously been told that to do it with the 7.3, you need an AIC, or Auxilliary Idle Controller. They were usually sold for comercial vehicles that would have a pto, etc. They aren't cheap... and I really wish someone would figure out the mod to make it work without them.

I'm not really a 7.3 guy or an electrical genius, but I think I've seen where someone wired in a variable resistor dial type switch to change the idle speed. As I recall, it wires into the throttle pedal wiring and you can dial in just about any speed with it.

Hopefully someone who's done this will see this and chime in.

I did this one on my truck. Works pretty good. I can flip the switch and idle her up. The poteniometer allows you to fine tune the rpm's to what ever you want.

`I have an International S-1900 with a DT-466, lost the turbo at about 320k miles, International tech said it was because the engine idled to much and the turbo wasnt spinning fast enough to pick up oil for lubrication.
Anybody ever hear this before?
