coolant confusion

what is the best coolant for an early 99? what type of maintence do you have to do on the coolant? If we do decide to get a coolant filter, should i get it with or without the additives?
thanks

Check you driver side valve cover for the mfg. date and serial number. If your engine was made after 2/2/99 with a serial number higher than 940614 then an Extended Life Coolant (Red in color) such as Fleetrite or Shell Rotella would be the best to use.No need to worry about coolant additives IF you use ELC coolant. If you have to use green coolant, then you WILL need to add a SCA to your coolant.Fleetguard makes the additive as well as the test strips to determine how much you need. The dieselsite.com filter kit is the easy way to go.It comes with everything you need. You can also get a coolant filter from Carquest (Part Number 89019).If you add a coolant filter kit,do not get the filter that contains SCA's.In fact,dieselsite.com does not sell charged filters.

If it is a low silicate formula it should be fine.Just make sure it says low silicate somewhere on the bottle. If not, then the Fleetrite green coolant is low silicate. It's available at your local international dealer. The dealer will also have your Fleetguard SCA and test strips.

12/98 Build date should stay with the green. The ELC is only approved for later models by Navistar, no big deal just make sure you buy the additive and check it often.
