Transmission Fluid - Mercon / Mercon V Question

Sorry to start a new thread about this......

Mobil 1, Amsoil Universal, etc all claim they're okay for Mercon and Mercon V specified transmissions - is it okay to use any of these in the R4100?

I was told teh Schaeffers universal, Amsoil universal were all ok to put in our trannys. I also read they are stopping making teh Mercon and that Mercon V can now be used as well. If ya want amsoil universal PM shawn with Performance Oil Products, he's a good guy and a sponsor on the site

A buddy of mine gave me 8 "leftover" un-opened qts of Mobil 1 syn - and the back says "for Mercon and Mercon V" - as does Amsoil Universal. I'm just trying to make sure the Mobil 1 Syn ATF is "approved" before buying the other 12 qts and dumping it all into my tranny.

You should be fine. I used the same fluid - mobile 1.

Additionally I believe there was a Ford TSB that was released stating that Mercon V was okay to use in previous Mercon/Dextronn III applications.

If you're looking for the conventional mercon fluid castrol and valvoline still make it.

The stuff your buddy gave you isn't the same Mobil One synthetic you can buy now, and I wouldn't mix the two. The new stuff is Mercon V and the old stuff is Mercon/Dexron III. I don't care what Ford is now saying your owners manual clearly stest NOT TO USE MERCON V in a 4R100 period. Now all of a sudden it is okay, I wonder why. There is a myth that the Mercon V has been reformulated and is now okay, nothing but BS, no reformulation has been done. Mercon/Dexron III was no longer made after June of 2007, once the supply is bought up that's it, Mercon V isn't going to do any damage right away, it will likely take several thousands of miles before it eats the seals away and by this time Ford knows there won't be any 4R100 still under warranty. Put what you want into your trans, unless someone can prove to me that a reformulation has actually taken place it won't go in my truck for as long as I can help it. I have 4 cases of Valvoline Mercon/Dexron III in the basement, and at 12K per year I am good for a few years. This was a hot discussion a while back, some believe mother Ford while others like me did their own research and found that Ford clearly doesn't care about the 4R100 owners out there, and is lying to their customers.
