What is this Sensor on my intake?

So after a little engineering and modification I've made my own intake out of high density 4" black plastic sewer pipe and a fram filter. I just didn't want to blow $52 on a Napa 6637 right now. Anyway, does anyone know what the little sensor is that was poking through the back of my factory air box just below the filter? I just twisted it out and left ot hanging there but I'm wondering if it's gonna make me throw any codes now?

thats your intake air temp sensor...and you want it as close to the filter as possible. It reads the temp of the air right before it goes through the filter...so you want it do do just that. As long as its connected it shouldnt throw any codes but you dont want engine heat to mess it up any more than you have too....

so if I don't have an air box anymore what can I do with it? All I have is a pipe with a filter on the end of it.

and that filter is avalible at truck shops for 25-30 instead of napas price

just zip tie it somewhere beside you filter its just reading the temp

That sensor is just to tell the computer the incoming air temp. Since you are now drawing air from all around the engine compartment then it is okay to just tie it up out of the way somewhere and it will still read the ambient air temp in the area. I have mine tied to one of the brake lines.

Now you got an early 99 so all you should need is a 3" PVC 45 and an air filter to do the standard DIY open air intake. Here is a part number cross over list for the filter. Surely you can call around and find a better price on one of them. I buy my Baldwin brand ( Baldwin Filters ) for $38 and it lasts about 2 years. So for around $40 and 10 minutes you can do the normal DIY intake. Cheap insurance for a $10,000 engine.
