What kind of mileage?
I am considering a 2002 Excursion. Can anyone give me any idea what kind of mileage I should expect from it?

I have a 2000 f250 4x4 atuo super cab long box 3.73 gears on vacation this Aug. running empty on a 231 mile run I got 21 mpg. The return trip I got 20 mpg this was on mix of speeds from 75mph to Yellow stone pk.45mph in Yellow stone park back to 60mph in Wy. on our way to Cody,WY. We left from McAlester,Mt.

In my '00 X, I get 16.7 MPG daily driving (highway + city driving). The closer you keep it to 70 MPH, the better your fuel economy will be. My best is 19.5 MPG. With a 44 gallon tank, that will take you over 800 miles without having to fill up. I normally see about 16.5-17 on the highway mainly because the speed limits are 70 or 75 where I drive, and you can get away with 80-85. 75 MPH and higher and the fuel economy starts to drop off.

I have owned a 2000 and 2003 Excursion, both 6.8s, both 2WD 3.73 ratio gears. Driving 75 on the highway, I would get about 16 mpg; around town, 12 to 13. Towing 4 tons, I got 8 mpg pretty consistently. I did meet a fellow once with the 4.10 gear in his Exxcursion - he got around 11 mpg. I wish I had purchased a diesel Excursion, but they were just too much money for me to part with. I really enjoyed my 2nd X, an Eddie Bauer. Good luck with your search!!

I too am trying to determine what would be a reasonable expectation of milage for my '99 F-350, 7,3 liter Powerstroke. The other responses vary from 16 mpg to 20-21 mpg. That seems like quite a range. My question is how do I get my milage up to the high end of that range or am I just stuck with a diesel sucker? For that matter, does anybody know a good diesel mechanic for a tune-up/up-grade in North Central Oklahoma? |

mileage range
Ryder...I think that your pretty much stuck with the mileage range. Lem is right when he says that it depends on how you drive. I have done a lot of hauling, city driving, some racing and gone for hundreds of miles without comming to a stop sign and I too, have gotten as low as 15 (hauling in the city) and as high as 22(empty on the freeway the whole trip). On average I get 18 to a tank, and that is some town driving, some hauling and some longer trips to town in it. Not too bad if you ask me.
At the same time, the thought of the excursion and better mileage due to the aero dynamics probobly pretty accurate. Do some research, that is really what most of the big rig deisels are getting right now. But I would say that the big gas rigs are not doing that much better. To me, not justifiable to sacrafice the torq and power that deisel engines offer. Not to mention the sound, feel and overall performance you get! |
