I have just completed a trip of 497 miles hauling a tandem full height caravan weighing 5000 lbs. Average speed was 60mph. and 90% highway driving. Fuel consumption was 14mpg.
Fuel was measured from full to empty and I mean EMPTY because I ran out of fuel still showing just under 1/4 tank, that caused some headaches because I initially changed the CPS [always carry a spare] before checking the fuel filter bowl. Next job is to drop the tank and investigate the fuel level inaccuracy - I have run below a 1/4 tank before without problems. Time to do the Hutch & harpoon mods and add a pre pump filter.

I think we are becoming aware of something other than mileage, economic erosion.

When I got my first job, I made $1.49 per hour at a Jack in the Box. I was 16, gas was $.31 per gallon, so I could get nearly five gallons of gas for my MGB per hour worked. It mattered little to me as fuel prices rose, as eventually I was in a union job making $24.85 per hour. By exploiting the right shifts and other work rules, I was harvesting $33 per hour, not bad for driving a transit bus. Diesel was $1.65 per gallon, so at my peak, I was earning 20 gallons per hour.

Things are different, I had a Deep Vein Thrombosis / Pulmonary Embolism. I don't drive a bus anymore. I am now medically retired and calculate my new effective retirement pay at $8.55 per hour, no longer a fortune. Fuel for my diesel Ford is now two gallons per “hour” but I no longer commute. I got my fat_backside on my bike and lost 100 pounds of fat in a year. I drive less and plan my errands to minimize distance.

In a way, the USA is facing a similar situation. The high pay jobs are leaving and industry after industry pushes jobs overseas. I heard a rumor GM was going to push most auto and truck production to China. This will make any car or truck maker in the states to do the same as they would be hard pressed to sell cars that cost twice as much only because the work was done in the USA. Alan Greenspan just recently suggested that a pullback from globalization (preserving jobs in America) will cause a catastrophic domino effect and cause the American economy to spiral down past a recession, and cause tremendous economic problems for America's trade partners.

A long time ago, the dollar was worth a certain amount of gold. Then that changed and the USA said our dollars are the standard for the World, which was true then. Then slowly things changed. Eventually the World started to think differently, but the USA did not. Some oil nations started to suggest they would price oil on the European currency, the Euro. Americans watched reality TV and ignored events around the World.

I am about to convert my Powerstroke to use Waste Veggie Oil, offered to me for free by a restaurant that pays $1.25 per gallon to have a company pump it and haul it away. I also bought a front receiver to mount a bike rack on the front of the truck. I already modified the fuel system to run B100 BioDiesel, which is now cheaper than #2. It will be a tri-fuel truck.

Yes, things are changing.

Happy New Year All,

Diesel Monkey

You need to suck it up load the truck down and go run the crap out of it .
Then it might be broke in enough to get good mileage ..It may ahve over 100k on it but if it wasnt driven hard once in a while it hasnt been broke in right.
the harder you breakin a diesel the better it will run ( to a certain point, not baby it).My 01 250 ext.flatbed,4x4 with 35s got 23 on highway.80horse, superchip araid intake, open exhaust weight8560 with full tank.
