I'd like to see 20 mpg with my oo powerstroke.I get 13 -15 on an average.The best I ever got is 18 in the summer keeping the rpm under 2000 at all times.When I shift into
4/4 and plow it goes down to 10 mpg.Ive tried all the fuel conditioners that suppose
to improve fuel economy but it's not worth the money in my case.This truck is maintained
as it's supposed to be.I change oil and filter every 4,000.Fuel filter changed every third
oil change.I am thinking about putting a chip in it but one that I don't have to change
the air intake and exhaust.My truck has 88,000 miles on it and runs perfect.I have every
repair records on every repair that's been done on the truck.It's 10 years old and people
still think it's new.

I think the variable engines you are talking about have electonically actuated valves so the pcm holds the valves open on the cylinders that arent firing. If you unplug injectors on a diesel you will probably get worse mileage.

i have a 2wd with mods and get 23mph on the hwy and 17-18 in town? if i drive it normal

Why would you want to take away power from a diesel......... its what these trucks are made for. thats like saying you want a cheeseburger but without the cheese and meat!!

Talking 20 MPG highway, Stock Truck

2002, F350, 32K, dually, crewcab, ZF6, using 6th gear overdrive, 4:10 gears, completely stock, ARE fiberglass lid, Wife=105 lbs, Me=220 lbs, some luggage, small cooler, small tool box, 60 to 65 MPH interstate with cruise control, driving like the old fart that I am, checking by dividing mileage into gallons burned. 20 MPG. Fuel filters changed every 10 K, air filters at 10K, oil and filter 3K. Any faster and the mileage drops off quickly. The six speeds get slightly better mileage then the automatics, and the lid cuts down air drag from the tailgate, but driving habits and conditions are the major factors.

A mod like you are talking about is not an option. The cost to do that kind of mod would not justify the end. If fuel mileage is that important, and I don't blame you a bit, you should look at a different vehicle. If you think that your 2wd has a low resale now, just do that mod you are talking about and it would never sell.
There are little things you can do to improve mileage. Properly inflated tires makes a difference, tonneau cover would help, clean fuel filter and air filter,
fuel additive such as Diesel Kleen, lowering kit, DP tuner chip helped me by 2mpg, keep the rpms at 2000 or below on the highway and of course, smooth acceleration from a stop.
If you want fewer cylinders for better mileage, do a cummins swap

Your idea has merit and HAS been done before on a gasser engine back in the early 90's. I gotta think on it for a while to remember the exact details. I believe it was on a Lincoln
4.6 engine,i believe it was sponsored by Ford ,and i believe it shudown "pairs" of cylinders at a time. The idea didnot catch on because of reliability issues in the valve train. There was significant increase is fuel economy.
The powerstroke does have much unused horsepower at 60 mph(unloaded) and when the cylinders are completely shutdown they act as springs .
The optimum setup would be both mods AND shutting down two cylinders.I think shutting down 4 would be too much for non-switchable operation.
Adapting this idea to the powerstroke could be problematic unless the computer is taught to deal with it and not compensate for it. That would be something cool if a tuner company offered such a tune.
I have spent time in a country that has been paying thru the nose for fuel for a long time. The diesels there are typically half the horsepower that they are here. The speed
requirements are less but the loads are pretty high especially on commercial and farm trucks.
I say go for it , if your willing to experiment. (I think THAT is one of they key successes of this site) If you read data that is unacceptable to you...its best to just ignore it.(unless it gets really outragious)
Example: I just installed a water injection unit that squirts beer into the exhaust headers.It converts heat energy into steam,drives my turbo to maximum boost and lowers my egts at the same time. After passing thru the turbo,the steam passes thru a hydrogen oxygen seperator. I store the hydrogen for fuel but divert the oxygen to my
egr valve.I now get 45mpg fuel mileage (One six pack per tank).You can see the proof on my dyno run. This device does NOT void the factory warranty because the Mosss Magison act says they cant. I sell this deveis on Ebaay....Oh ,there is a sneaky pipe at the hydergen oxigen seprator to catch the alcehol from da beeer....guesc where da
alcehol goes?????

Ok, I will bite. I was getting over 20mpg with stock injectors and am getting 18.7mpg now.

Your problem is you have a programmer with tuning that is generic junk. Get a real chip like a DP tuner with the 60economy or 80economy setting, AFE stage 2 intake or other intake that pulls air from the front of the truck and do the zoodad mod at the same time. Top it off with a full exhaust system and you will pickup quite a bit.

After I did a bunch of mods, we were testing tunes and stuff. I told Jody to tune my chip for other tuning and he took off my 80E. I was only getting 16.5mpg. We got all my tuning figured out and I got 80E added back to my collection of tunes and I picked up over 2mpg.
