Engine Cover

Just wondering. Does anybody know what the engine cover (plastic cover over fuel bowl) is for and what exactly does it do besides being annoying when changing fuel filter and look pretty?
And please don't tell me so I know it's a PSD engine.

Good thing mine is there, I thought I had a duramax till I opened the hood and it reminded me

Mine is going away next fuel filter change
