DIY intake question.

I think I am going to do the DIY/TYMAR intake on my truck. I am an electrician and as such, I have access to 4" EMT (electrical metallic tubing). This is the pipe we electricians use to pull wire through in commercial installations. The pipe is 4" inside diameter or about 4 1/4" outside diameter. I could even bend a 45 degree bend on it if it were to benefit me. Does the short piece of pipe that joins the intake baffle and filter have to be 4" outside diameter or will my stuff work? Also, is there a link or something that shows what filter catalog number I need for the DIY? I know about the NAPA 6637 but what are some others that will work? I am going to try and find it locally and I know of a couple companies that deal with Baldwin, Donaldson etc.

Thanks guys. This site has been of great help thus far.

Hey there, another sparky! I used 3" EMT for the muffler delete pipe on my truck, perfect fit for the stock exhaust system. However, the intake side of things, for the DIY filter, any parts store can cross the number to what ever filter brand they have. As for the pipe needed, if you have the late '99-'03 7.3 PSD, you only need 3" of 4" exhaust pipe. A local muffler shop sold me 3" for the same price they sell it for by the foot, a hose clamp from the hardware store, and a few minutes to pull out the old air box, and in 15 minutes, I was done.
So, to answer your question, no, 4" EMT will not work, too large outside diam.
Good luck!

you can also use a 3" PVC pipe collar. it is a perfect fit into the filter and the stock intake tubing. I used the pvc collar for about a year until i got my 4" exhaust and used a small peice of it to replace the collar....Rod
