engine out.. now what?

i'm planning on removing my engine soon so i can replace the oil pan.

i'm looking for suggestions like,

"while you have the engine out you better change the __________"

OR

"its easier to do _________ while the engine is out"

so far i'm replacing:

oil pan

rear main seal

exhaust manifolds gaskets (the bolts are rusted bad so if figured i'll beat them before they beat me)

thanks in advance for the help.

The guys at Swamps advised me to remove the piston cooling jets and tig weld the tubes into the bases while I had the oil pan off. It was easy to do and would be a real pain to fix if one of them fell off. Here are the pics of my engine job if your interested. Shutterfly | View Shared Pictures

I will tell you that I would not replace the rear seal unless it is leaking. Messing with that will increase your chances for a leak in the future. The advice I got when I replaced my oil pan was, "If it's not broke, don't fix it". That has worked for me.

What mods do you have done to your truck already and what is your power goals with the truck?

First thing that comes to mind is headstuds and valve springs if you are looking to make 40+psi of boost.

it has 130,000 miles

interesting theory on the rear seal....anyone else agree?

very interested in welding the tubes into the bases. can this be done with a mig? i can tig but do not have a tig machine at my current job.

i just got the truck. i traded my 1993 mustang for it straight up. its been in my yard for 3 weeks; i'm waiting for the holidays to pass so i can start.

i don't plan on making crazy power. maybe intake, exhaust, whatever lowbuck mods i can learn from here, and maybe a programmer.

Don't turn the engine upside down until you get the oil pan off-----you will risk getting all the garbage that has settled at the bottom of the pan into your high pressure oil system.
