Do you really have to have a cat?

I just baught my 2001 f350 sd lariat and it has the stock exhaust. I would like to start my modding and would like to start with a 4 inch exhaust. Does the 01 have a cat? I thaught they did. Do you need to keep your cat to pass emissions?

I've got an 01 that is NOT a california model and it definately has a cat. I've heard of some guys on here saying that models from that year do not have cats unless it's a CA model so I don't know what the answer is but here's a bump for ya.

You should do a search on here for 'farmboysdiesel'. It seems that he's got the best deals in town on his own exhaust system. Check him out.

Fill out your signature if you plan on sticking around so we can help you more.

oh yeah, WELCOME TO THE ORG!

No, you don't have to have a cat on it for emissions, and i'm pretty sure most states are like that. They don't even check for it here in Colorado. I have an 01 as well.
Here's a bump either way.

Save that cat tho. At this point in time,I dont believe small trucks require polution inspection....I think its only a matter of time tho. If i am correct...they already inspect cars in this state for mods.

No cat necessary man. There were a couple other states that required them other than cali but not many

Take it off and throw it on a shelf in the garage for future use. Cali will start emission testing, it is a matter of time. I know it was being voted on in the legislature this last summer.

Most of the superduties of that year did not come with a cat so, hence, you don't need one.
I just had my emissions done last month and speaking to the guy that does them, he said the states requirements are so lax that, it would take a poorly tuned truck to fail the test. It mostly just checks for smoke.
Make sure you have a clean air filter and of course, no aftermarket programming installed. You'll pass.
I have a 4" exhaust, intake and a larger turbo and I passed with lot's of room to spare.
