Glow Plug Replacement Issue??

Howdy all,

I just recently got this late 99 7.3 that needs injectors and glow plugs. I'm gonna have them rebuild from Jim Rose and also going to order new plugs from him.

My question is, I have three glow plugs I can't seem to get out with a 10mm socket. Five of them the socket popped right on and they broke loose. The other three, the socket wont go on the plug... I've tried a million angles and whatnot.

Is this a common problem? Has this happened to anyone?

Thanks,
- Shelby

I did not have that issue. Is there some junk down in the hole? Is your socket wall thin or thick? Mine was pretty thin.

There's just oil from what I can see.. I used a 3/8 regular deep well and it got all the other five out. Mind you, I don't have the injectors in either.. I tried with a 1/4 deep well for a couple of tries and still, no worky..

I mean, wtf?! lol.

Just curious - do you feel any kind of grabbing on the plugs from the socket?
meaning - does it feel like the ends got rounded on the plugs and you're just not getting enough bite to break them free?

Yes.. I don't believe they're rounded out though, because it's obvious the valve covers have never been removed off this truck.

The difference from what you're saying, is it doesn't feel like it has any bite.

Then i'm curious if it's just carbon buildup around the plugs then. Might need a light to see, and possibly a pick of some kind to score out some of that crud.

I know it may be a little late, but you may want to look into getting one of these.
I'm starting to see more and more recomendations for getting one - just for those awkward and hard to see areas...

I'm planning on getting one myself.
