Bought my truck w/ an Airaid intake already on it and have had truck for four years now, so I'ld say I know what it sounds like. I just put on the NAPA filter a couple of days ago to see if I could tell in difference, and sound wise....I don't hear any difference at all.

Yeah you get a very similar whistle as the more expensive kits. An intake, especially the diy for the money, is one of the best upgrades you can do for a 7.3L IMO.

I'd ditto that the DIY intake is the best way to go... unless you want the flash and flair of some unit out of a box. Myself, I'll take cheap and 3 times the filter area anyday, matches my muddy 'only-gets-washed-when-it-rains' truck. Some people have fab'd up nice sheet metal boxes to house the new filter, I didn't, dang it's tight there behind the battery, the hood has put a crease in the filter where it hits, holds it nice and tight! On the 99.5 trucks like mine, it's simple. I looked at my friend's early 99, and the piping to the turbo is a little diffrent, might need a 45 elbow, not just a straight piece of pipe like the later ones... GO for it!

I did mine for less than $5, including filter (which I already had). I don't know if it's louder than the aftermarkets but, yes, it's defintelty more pronounced than stock. Personally, I like hearing it (except while watching my fuel gage drop each time it spools hard.) No matter, any DIY will be much cheaper than any kit. Save your cash for other things.
