Freeze plug options

On my 99 the freeze plug was leaking so the mechanic put a screw in plug do to the cost savings in labor. Now since it has gotten cold here, the plug is leaking. I was told they make these plugs in different lengths. When you install one that is a bit longer when tightened it will swell abit inside the block and prevent the plug from pushing out. Any thoughts on this? Once again the reason I'm looking to go this route is due to the labor cost is over $500 for them to support the engine and take out the engine mount for access. Thanks
