I reckon it depends on what you want to know the most. If you want cool down temp then the closer to the turbo makes sense, if you want and idea of Exhaust temps to keep your pistons from turning to jello than closer to the manifold. I think the area we generally use ( near the connection of manifold and up pipe) gives the best of both worlds.

CSIPSD has I believe 17 gauges, his front seat looks like a ****pit. The more info you have the better you can monitor what's going on under the hood, so I say go for it!!!

You can never have enough gauges, I have 3 on the pillar and 4 overhead and still want more.
With my pyro mounted in the up pipe Y I see 300 at idle and 1500 after flooring it for 10-12 seconds. I originally started mounting them there because I thought I would see the temps from both sides but I later realized there is a divider plate inside the Y so I still only see the drivers side. Later on I plan to upgrade the Y and up pipes with a ceramic coated set that doesn’t use donuts so I will probably move it to the manifold then if no one thinks it is better in the Y.

I run my pyro through my Bully Dog Outlook...I like the digital readout. I ordered a second pyro probe to have both pre-turbo and post-turbo EGTs displayed.

Like the others have said, the only issue with pre-turbo mounting is shavings. It was MUCH easier than we expected to drill and tap the manifold

With a good sharp drill bit, cast iron should produce long curls and not little tiny shavings. After I drilled the pilot hole, the larger bit only mad several long curls with no small shavings at all.

I'm working on my guages right now. I have a question about the light tie in. Someone said on another post what color wire to tap into. Anyone remember it?

I just used a test light to find the one to use. I don't recall the color. Try the test light.

Who did you get your gauges from? I think DieselManor - Taking the Mystery out of Diesel Performance™ has the step by step on their website, you want to tie it into the dimmer.
As Maintain has said, this whole thing about matal shavings is nothing but a myth. Show me one turbo that has seen any damage from this. The law of gravity says the shavings will fall down, a twist drill is designed to pull the shavings out of the hole not through it. I drilled mine stepping up three times and dipping the bit in grease, although I don't think I even needed the grease. Just a pair of glasses because the shavings will fall right in your face and they can be a bit warm, lol!!!
And there is nothing wrong with the clamp method, many are using it and it works just fine.
