Swapping Dana50 for Dana60
Got a few questions before I drive over to look at the actual axle but my 2000 has a Dana50 (of course) and I found a source for 2003-2005 Dana60 axles for pretty good prices and wanted to know if my Dana50 steering knuckle can just be moved over to the end forging of a Dana60 axle.
That was one heck of a run on sentence, huh? Reason I ask is because I have Dynatrac ProSteer ball joints in my Dana50 steering knuckle along with a Dynatrac fixed spindle hub kit which I hope I will not have to completely disassemble to move over to the new axle. Thanks |

Yes, the knuckle will swap over on the 03-04 axle, a 05 axle is different. You will need to use the D60 inner shaft and the 35 spline outer from your Dynatrac setup. I would strongly recommend replacing the universals while everything is apart. You will still have to tear most of the assembly apart. Lockouts have to come out, spindle comes off then you can pull the shaft and finally the knuckle will come off. Only other thing I can think of is the D60 drive shaft for the same transmission configuration, IIRC the D60 tail is a bit longer so you need a shorter shaft.

Yeah, after thinking about it I realized I was going to have to tear everything apart to do the swap. I replaced the u-joints when I installed the fixed spindle kit. I coated those u-joints with anti-sieze so if I had to take them apart again it would be a lot easier than it was removing the 12 year old units. They were tough!
I have the manual transfer case; I was not sure about the front driveshaft. Thanks for the information! |
