But Uniden and Cobra both make a decent radar detector. So does whistler and you can pick them up at Walmart or any where that sells electronics for autos for around 80 bucks. |

I usually just control how fast I'm driving, no speeding = no fines! Any cop that pulls you over for 5mph over the limit is a jerk, but anything after that is fair game IMHO.

a radar detector is never gonna work for you near arco idaho....
cops now have "instant on" radar guns...they only shoot radar if there is a car there....and they only shoot it once...so if there are not many cars in front of you for the radar to bounce off of and hit your detector, it is innefective. It will pick it up with no traffic, problem is it picks it up the same time the cop gets your speed.... Valentine by far is the best "reasonable" detector out there...but they start i beleave at about $150 bucks....some of the better modles by other companies are over 300 bucks..... |

my uniden cost around $69- when bought new several years ago, believe me it has paid for itself several times, it will also be put through the paces this weekend.

I was working at the firehouse the other day and a sherriffs deputy come in and asked if he could use my bay to have a place to install his radar.... well with me allowing this and talkin to him in the process...i figured out that a radar detector is absolutely useless...the have a switch on the radars that they can hit and a radar detector wont detect it but as soon as they see something they want to check the speed on it starts workin the radar and works almost instantly...therefore even with a radar detector it does you absolutely no good.... i agree with the earlier statement about a cb radio being by far the best means of knowing where the local law enforcement officers are .... truckers keep a pretty good eye on this type of thing...just my .02 cents but just figured id let yall know that lil piece of info
keep on strokin |

Just went from San Jose CA to Yakima WA, my friend drove to Oregon and got tired. I took over and kept it at 52mph. Had a few "close encounters". They get so pissy when they can't tag you.

Cheap radar detectors are not the way to go. If you're driving fast/crazy enough that a cop realizes it and decides to flip on his radar gun, you're gonna get pulled over regardless. I bought a nice radar detector that will detect the radar from over 1.5 miles away, which a walmart detector will not do. You get what you pay for. Escort 8500 X50 or Valentine V1 are the best around. Laser guns are more instant, a radar has to lock onto you for a few seconds to get a good reading, so if you get the warning ahead of time you have time to slow down so it locks you in at a slower speed. I had a cheapo unit that didn't give me enough warning, the radar registered at 92mph and locked in at 78mph, still 23 over
