Stock box air intake - better filter?

A great local shop offered me the upgraded ford intake and box that my early 99 never got - for free. a great improvement over the early 99 stock box. Looks sorta like the AIS intake, pulls air from the front now, and i promptly did the zoodad mod. the upgraded box came with a K&N drop-in filter installed. all the K&N bashing i've read, coupled with the fact i don't really want to deal with cleaning/oiling a filter, has me thinking about changing. since i just dropped over $3,000 on a new tranny, exhaust, and other little things, i'm wondering what's the best filter to drop in my stock box?
i know i can change to the napa 6637, or tymar, and that would basically make that zoodad mod useless, right? maybe i'm being ultra-cheap trying to keep using the stock air box....
thanks.
