01 7.3 Starter Problem
Below 50 deg. the starter spins but wont engage the flywheel. Last year I thought i had a bad starter and replaced it with a remanufactured one and there was no change. I just continued to plug it in and everything was fine unless it was cold all day. Then i checked for a flat spot on the flywheel but it is not damaged. Colder weather is upon us 40-50 and it is doing it again after no trouble all summer long. The starter spins and has only momentary contact with the flywheel and kicks out. After about 10-15 trys it will finally hit but if the engine fires at all it will kick out. The starter moter runs fast and strong with no drag at all. Once i get it to engage the flywheel the truck starts right up.
I tried a remanufactured starter, I tried a new solenoid on the remanufactured starter, I have cleaned all of the terminals, Is the starter drawing amperage away from the solenoid plunger? Is there a friction problem internal to the plunger? Is there any other relay or control to the solenoid that could be a problem? Too much resistance in the cables? Have I continuously gotten junk remanufacturing? I just ordered another starter but dont think that is the problem.. HELP |

could have been just a junk batch of bendix (sp?) when they went for a rebuild.

This probably ain't gonna help much, but at O'Rielly's yesterday, while looking for a starter for my '00, they said the '01 had a different part number than the '00.
I took mine out because it seems to be turning over weakly and it don't sound just right either. I have new batteries and it charges fine. After taking it out, I saw that it seems to be engaging only about 1/2 of the teeth so then I started to wonder if the goobers even have the right one in there, cause it looks like its been replaced. |

Mine did that, but it turned out the batteries weren't strong enough to throw the starter out hard enough. I'm assuming you've already checked them, but it's a thought if you haven't
