Pedestal and flapper?

Ok so this is probably a dumb question but I keep reading about gutting the pedestal and deleting the flapper. What does this do for the truck? I have no ideal what all this means can anyone explain this please?

Allows the exhaust to escape quicker because its less restrictive. Lowers egt slightly. Plus plugging the pedestal, or replacing it with a blank one, will keep it from leaking from the actuator.

It's mostly a piece of mind mod.

I also noticed my truck will smoke less when I romp on it. Maybe with the better flow its creating a bit more boost burning more fuel? I don't know, maybe its in my head, lol.
