dual exhaust on an 2001 excursion w/7.3 powerstroke
To ge better fuel mileage, I am considering putting dual exhaust on this thing. Should I consider just going to a 4" single exhaust instead of the dual exhaust.

diesel duals = no no!
Duals just don't look right on a diesel unless they're stacks and I don't see stacks going on any excursions. I mean the duals that banks and some other companies have are okay but I personally think on a pickup it should exit out one side to get all that sound together, and not all chopped up. I passed a duramax this morning with duals and it sounded stupid. I wanted to smack the guy! It didn't even sound like a diesel, it just had an annoying hum to it as I passed - I mean roared by. Think of it this way. We have two exhaust manifolds and they both have to go through the turbo ya know. Just buy a kit from magnaflow or the company of your choice. I bought a 4 magnaflow for mine and it sounds really really good when I get on it. It fit together perfectly and took about 40 minutes to put on myself! Plus it'll flow so much better than some hole in the wall exhaust shop job....just my piece of mind.....

There's no sense in running duals on a PSD, the benefits would only be cosmetic, since there's only one exhaust outlet on the turbo. A 4" single and aftermarket downpipe would help your cause a lot, most likely picking up 1-2 MPG and a little extra power. The turbo will spool faster and EGTs will drop. Plus you get the added benefit of a screaming turbo.

dual exhausts
Thanks folks I think I'll just put a 4" exhaust on the thing. I'm not interested in a rumbling, noisy, loud exhaust, but rather improved mileage & some performance. I've already got a 60 hp chip in her so that gives me everything I need. The K&N air filter changed the air intake sound dranmatically. You can hear her breathe when you get on it slightly. Any good advice for sources out there w/quality stuff? Then I'll have to decide if it will be stainless or galvalum. If you want to reply to my email its - gbono2@yahoo.com |

I went with the T304 SS single system from www.pmtchips.com on my 05 F250 for around $600 including shipping and love it. I live in the north so I went with the highest quality SS for the least amount of cash I could find. These systems are made by Silverline for PMT so they cost less since you don't know they made it till you get it. You can go to www.ansaautomotive.com/Silverline and listen to a bunch of different clips on the single and dual system. The duals sound pretty sweet but it all depends on how much you want to spend. Hope this helps

Ask the expert...ha ha
Hey bono your exhaust will not be loud when if you went with the magnaflow, or most other makers for that matter. It's only noisy, rumbly and loud if you decide to leave out the muffler and come turbo back uninturupted. I know this from experience!! And like I said, it's a great kit, fit perfectly, and still looks great underneath after 5 months of being on. I was just under it this weekend doin some routine inspections. Oh by the way, the kit I got is stainless.Hey Farmboy- do you mean you hacked out your muffler and your cat and just spliced in a couple of pieces? Or do you mean you had no kit at all? I can say that my buddy removed his cat and muffler on his 04 and it sounded really good. I never heard it with an actual exhaust kit on it because he traded it in for a jeep...what a moron. Anyway when I bought my truck someone had cut the exhaust off about 3 feet after the cat. After a few months I cut the cat off and ran pretty much the stock downpipe with a turndown on it for a while. I heard the turbo a lot, but it was so loud and obnoxious that I had to get a kit for it. Plus I didn't want anymore soot covering the underbody than what was already there. I can still hear the turbo quite a bit thru the magnaflow but not as much. I think I might take my muffler out and see how I like it since it exits behind the tire now, and not right under the passenger side floor! But anyway do yourself a favor and get a real mandrel bent kit....it's worth it. Oh, and don't get no wussy 5 inch tip....stand out with a 6 inch!! ha!

I have an Excursion and duals would be a pain. As is you have to relocate the shock to the outside so the tailpipe doesn't rub on it. The differance in stock to 4" is huge if you get a turbo back system. The factory down pipe leaves a lot to be desired. The use of a muffler isn't nesessary. Psd's don't drone inside under a load. We don't have salt on the roads up here so I bought a turbo back system from Summit Racing for $299.00 and the shipping charge was $8.00!!!!!

correct!
Kia's right...but if you don't run with the muffler make absolute sure that it's exiting behind the tire(s) or you'll drive yourself wacko!
