Is this truck worth fooling with

I stumbled across a 1999 Powerstroke pickup today that is about to go to be stripped for parts and the body sold for scrap. The owner has offered it to me for $1,200.00. I have 2 weeks to decide.
This could be a money pit, what do you think?
One owner, 1999 F250 Powerstroke, crewcab, short bed, XLT, 289,000 miles. Has been used the last few years as a farm truck with a feed box mounted across the bed behind the cab.
1. Exterior: Cab pretty nice, but bed is TOTALLY ruined. Will need replacement bed, or a flatbed installed
2. Interior: Rear seat area good. Front leather seats poor condition and worn out. Interior: filthy with a half inch of dried mud and dirt on the front carpet. Dash in good shape.
3. Drivetrain: Engine starts easily runs good. Trans. shifts properly, but leaks fluid heavily from somewhere. Rear end and transfer case good. Front drive axle in bad shape and makes lots of bad noises going down the road. Front end probably needs complete disassembly and rebuild.
4. Tires: Very good
Truck is used daily and still runs up and down the road good, but boy, it is rough around the edges.
Is this truck worth the price of $1,200, and the trouble of going 130 miles to haul it home on my trailer?
What do you think it would be worth all cleaned up and running good? I can see easily dumping 4 grand into this project, if not more.
Am I crazy to buy this??
Thanks
Jeff

IMO I don't think it's that bad of a buy if you are going to fix it up and drive it. The mud inside can be cleaned out and you shouldn't have a hard time find any parts for it. Depends how much time you are willing to put in it really.

Oh, I forgot to mention at the beginning that the truck is a 4x4.

Engine alone is worth that, plus what the rest in scrap. I say its a great find. Walk up with $1000 and I bet he takes it.

I am almost sure I am going to buy it. Just need to find a replacement bed near north Texas, or a good flatbed that will fit it. If I get the truck, I will post some photos. It is pretty ugly right now.

Sounds like its worth 5k or so now, front end most likely needs ball joints, sway bar end links and new uni hubs and it should be good to go, 289k on the motor is nothing. You can get it for 1,200, spend as little as 3,800 on it, and have a nice truck for 5k (if you wrench on it yourself) that's worth 10k-12k.

1,000- bed
800- new front leather
1,000- front end repairs
1,000- transmission repairs

I wouldn't say it's worth $5k as is but definitely worth 1200. If nothing else put a $1-2k into it and double your money.
