there is some "viewing window" somewhere that you can open up and see what kind they are, but I have no idea how you do it or where to look

Yep just let all the oil drain back down into the pan before you check.

do you think the powder rods will shorten the life of the motor? (not that I know which mine are, but I might check one day know that I know how)

No not unless you push 400RWhp or more then your on borrowed time. Takes alot to get to 400RWhp though
