It should be 15 on the button. I bought 15 quarts (well 16 actually b/c I did the flush) and it took 'em all. I drained the old oil, and took the filter off and drained it. Put filter back on...put in one quart, cranked it over a few times, drained, replaced w/ new filter, and filled w/ 15 quarts. Level was right in the middle on the stick. |

I don't know if sorb0 has an early '99 or a '99.5. I'm not sure about the early '99 7.3, but the '99.5 is 15qts with filter change (with a stock oil pan). My '03 7.3L is 15qts with filter change and I'm at the high line. Maybe with the 16qts add not all of the oil had a chance to filter down to the pan? But with such a huge pan I don't think a 1qt difference is going to give you much of a level change on the dipstick anyway. I'd stick with the 15qts until your dipstick tells you that you are definitely below the line. Just my .02. Hope this helps. |

Ditty,
Question on your oil drain/crank over engine post... it sounds like you drain the oil out of the crankcase first, drain the filter, reinstall the filter, then only add one quart of oil, and then crank it over? Doesn't this leave the crankcase, and thus, your oil pump, with out any oil? Is one quart enough to submerge the oil pump pick up tube? It would seem to me you run the risk of cranking the motor over without enough oil... what are the damage risks? I dont doubt your ways, you seem to be one of the more knowlageable ones here, and I figure you have a good reason for the methods you choose... just wanted to check some details before I did the same... thanks! |
