Early 99 upgrades

ok, I have been doing some sniffing around on here, I'm tossin around the idea about changing my early 99 over to the later 99.5 to 03 setup for the turbo and exhaust. How would this be beneficial? what parts would I need to do this?

I've learned so much from this site it raises alot of questions as I learn more and more about these rigs!

Its a pretty pricey upgrade. Im not sure if there is an aftermarket kit or if you would have to piece it together from 99.5-03 parts. I believe you need to change the intakes on the heads all the piping, turbo, and pedestal. Not sure what else is needed. Someone will chime in and give you all the info you need

You have to change the turbo, pedestal, intake Y, and up pipes. And maybe a few other things. I would check on a d66 turbo from Beans diesel performance and some upgraded injectors instead.

Yea, what Pipelayer said. The D66 turbo from beans would be a better upgrade for you over the 99.5+ set-up. The D66 is a direct bolt on and will take much less time to do and cost less than swaping over all your early 99 stuff to the late 99+ years. I thought about doing the 99.5 turbo change about a year ago... needless to say, I'll go for the D66 over that set up any day. Do a few forum searches on the D66 turbo and check it out I think you will find that it is a much greater bang for the buck modification. Hope this helps you. Good luck.

D66 for your early 99 will be just fine. I loved it when I had mine. The only reason I took it off is I wanted more power. I made 471hp with my D66. It towed awesome as well. 20mpg when empty as well.

the only reason to upgrade to a late99-03 system would be to go with a Garrett GT38R turbo or a TN BB and it will only make as much power as I did with the D66. The GT38R is good for 450-475hp. The D66 will get you there for less than the GT38R alone. To convert you need up pipes, pedestal, turbo, intake "Y", intake plenums. You will need these parts here: http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...ROD&ProdID=276
and then a turbo like this one here: 99-03turbo

So, if you just use the basic prices that are from the sites I listed above you get $700 for conversion parts and $1850 for a turbo you tie up $2550 plus freight.

D66 is $1325 plus freight. One hell of a deal if you ask me.

Another option would be a Hypermax H2E. Cheaper than the conversion and the future options are endless.

Keep Strokin'

as far as simply doing a 4" turbo back exhaust and aftermarket air intake, would those two upgrades be very beneficial on an early 99? i'm not looking for much power, i just want the truck to run great and sound good. it's going to have a future life as a family camping rig.

Any exhaust will work. The only two intakes that work on the early99 are the AFE stage 2 and the AIS. All others mount to the late99 mounting system and it is different.
