Questions For Tech Gurus.....parts identification....
I was speaking to Tony Wildman about my chip on the phone tonight, and because of a possible retrofitted engine in my 99, I was wondering somethings....
1. How do I tell what injectors I have? Do I have to pull the valve cover off to find out, or do I have to pull the whole injector out? 2. how do I tell if I have the later model Turbo and y pipe going to the intake? What should be the A/R numbers on the larger late 99 and up turbos? The reason I am asking, is because I was told that on my early 99 model truck, the previous owner had a 03 7.3L motor swapped in. I know the injectors, turbo, HPOP and pcm should be different. How do I tell the later model years from the early model years? I have t know this in order for Tony to burn my chip, plus it will help me out with knowledge about my truck anyhow. I wanted to find out if he just used the block, or if he used the entire wiring harness, PCM, and all the updated later model year sensors and such. Help will be appreciated guys!!!!! |

Look at the intake pleniums. That is the orange boot where the intake "Y" goes into the heads. If they are 3" it is a late99-03. If they are 2" it is an early99. You can also tell if you can only put your hand flat over the turbo it is a late99-03, if you can put your fist up there it is an early99. The block could the an 03 and the accessories could be from the early99. If it is an 03,you got took. That means you have PMR's and not forged rods. |

Thanks Strokin- put my hand on the turbo....you mean like inside the compressor housing? makeing a fist and putting it inside up next to the compressor wheel? hmmmm....ok. Will have to check that out.... I was told the engine has been sleeved .20 over, and has Mahle forged rods, pistons and crank. I think the engine seems alittle stronger than a stock 7.3L would, but not a heck of alot. No way to check that except have the engine tore down and looked at. Do you know how to identify injectors? part number or anything? |

Your hand goes between the turbo and the cowl(part of the truck that sticks out from the fire wall over the turbo). Also the little orange boots that connect the intake "Y" to the intake plenums: if they are 2" it is an early99, if they are 3" it is late99-03. If you take the valve cover off you will find a part number on top of the injector. You do not have to take the injector out. there is no other way to find out what injector you have without taking the valve cover off. If you have forged rods you need to do some inspecting of your truck. To see if you have forged or PMR's follow the instructions here: 7.3 Inspection Hole for Powdered Metal Rod Determination If you have PMR's max power is 400hp but if you have forged rods then max is somewhere from 500-600hp. |

I looked at the truck, I can put my whole fist and then some over the turbo, so I have the smaller turbo, and I have the 2' intake plenums, so i have mostly early 99 stuff. I would assume that I have early 99 injectors too. I havent looked at the rods yet. If I do look at them, will I lose any oil out that hole? Or do i have to wait to do it when I change the oil? If I did upgrade to the 3" intake plenums, I guess I have to do a whole Y pipe change also, considering that they tap into that....Thanks for the info!!

Take a look at this thread about a conversion. It will explain it all and help save me some typing all over: Early 99 upgrades I would venture to say the block was swapped and everything else was taken off the early99. You will not loose oil to inspect the rods. I hope the rods are truly forged, the are a lot better than the PMR's. |

i'm about to put an '01 motor in my early 99 (which has the conversion kit on the old motor to bring it current. I swapped in a van turbo to lower my egt's.) When the '01 goes in, the '01 injectors will stay with it. You probably have the '03 injectors in yours unless they got a motor that was missing the injectors.
