Cool Trans temp

I don't knock the quality of banks products. I guess it all depends on your bank account. For the price of a trans command you can put all sonnex valves, a external cooler, filter and temp gauge. I just rebuilt my 4R100 from my superduty. This gave me the chance at valving the front pump with the Sonnex high flow valve. Lockup hits like any other gear now. A must if you have the pump out. The extra cooler helps a ton. I put mine off to the right side of the grill with a 6" electric fan. The bottom line is the least amount of shifting and quicker the gear change, the longer your trans will last.

I did install a Banks torque converter and the trans command, I think the trans command cost me 325 and the torque converter ran about 995. I got a 250 return credit for my old converter I also added a B&M deep pan and a temp gague. It like never gets up over 200 degrees, and I pull a 28RK Coloraido 5th wheel - even up Mt Shasta at 70 miles per. My hope is the tranny will last as long as the engine. Mike OB

Talking trans

The temps your getting are awesome for pulling like that. It does go against some of the dinosaur oil gurus. Most detergent packages work there best at 205 degrees. I don't think I ask what the optimum temp was for the amsoil atf. 200 to even 225 shouldn't permanetly alter the oils propertys. I have seen mineral gear oils that had seen 300. They also looked like water in the drain pan.

Look on e-bay, you can find a four clutch torque converter for the price of a two clutch and it has a long warranty - I also found that there is a transmission shop in Phinox that gives four (4) year warranty? parts and labor. they claim they come with a bullet converter for less than $2000, never used one but it looks good on the feed back. I am going to start a new thread about transmissions, it is a learning thing that I hope will answer many questions about 4R100 transmissions. Mike OB

Cool answers

I have heard alot of people raving about the transcommand. I have played around, burned up and rebuilt one of my 4R100's. I never got the shift firmness or coverter lock with an external control. My rebuild has fantastic shifts and converter lock. I do use my own lockup device. The sonnex shift valves, pressure valve and front pump to converter lock pressure valve. I didn't use the sonnex springs because my trans had a Fairbanks kit already. I don't know how much the banks unit cost. I only have $300.00 in the parts to rebuild the trans.
