The big savings comes when you start putting weight behind the truck. My 2000 F-350 got 12mpg towing a trailer in the mountains where my old '71 F250 with a 390 gas motor got 6.

Well it would help if you had any records with the trucks, with that mileage you're bound to have some isuess, for example my truck (2000 F350 PSD). Similar mileage bought it with 277k on it and also my first diesel, here is the list of the stuff i've done so far:

speedometer cluster(speedo didn't work)
fixed all door lock actuators
transmision(took a **** a week after I bought it)
tensioner and belt
droped the tank and removed filters which were cloged also pickup broke off and had to be replaced
cleaned fuel bowl
replaced fuel return spring
cleaned cloged back pressure sensor tube
sway bar links
rear diff. fluid
6637 filter
injector control sensor and plug

still to come
both batteries
glow plugs and relay

I did all the work myself(except rebulding the trans) so it wasn't that bad money wise, but still a lot of work. So make sure you do your research
