Trans gauge sending unit issue

Hey all...

I've started the process of installing my gauges in my '00 F350. Painted the "a" piller pod, gonna start fishing the wires into the dash and through the firewall. Tried to put the sending unit into the trans, and it just didn't seem to match the threads. I got AutoMeter gauges, and the sending unit for the trans is very close in size... here's what I did:

I pulled the plug out of the drivers side of the trans, and tried to gently thread the sending unit in to the port... went in a few threads/turns, and seemed to bind up. Took it out, tried to thread the plug that came out of the hole into an extra adaptor that came with the gauge and sending unit, and simular results, goes in a few turns, but just doesn't feel right.

I've heard here that some sending units are too long, and that I wouldn't want to force it into the test port on the side of the trans... this is not supost to be a problem with the autometer gauges?

I think I just want some reasurance that the hole tapped into the side of the trans, on the drivers side, just infront of the shifter block, is indeed 1/4" NPT? If this is true, I can be sure to check both, and I will have no qualms about spinnin' in the sending unit, and snugin' it up.... Just didn't want to mess up the port in the trans, lest I not be able to plug it back up properly.

Thanks for any input...

Thats probobly about right. Remember it tapers so it should snug up quickly. Don't overtighten!
