Where's the CAT?

Don't laugh, I am a nOOb............

I'd like to get a 4" MBRP XP SS "turbo back" exhaust system for my 2002 F250 CCSB PSD. Do these systems include a 4" downpipe for the turbo, or does that need to be purchased separately? I see that the systems come with or without a muffler, but do not mention anything about a catalytic converter.

Looking under my truck, which I bought new in 2002, I don't see a catalytic converter, but was told that it "should" have one. Do diesels have catalytic converters? What am I missing?

I live in a county that requires bi-annual emissons testing / checks. I want to make sure that I don't install an exhaust system that won't be compliant and fail the testing.

Yes "turbo back" kits come with the downpipe.

I would not get a s.s. kit... not worth the money IMO...

Some 7.3 trucks did not come with the kitties but most do... I would call the company where you wanna get the exhaust from and talk to them about what comes with their kit!

And the kitty should be under the front seats region

Check to see if it looks hacked and has a piece of pipe welded in its place!

My 7.3 did not come with a cat from the factory and we are also required to get echecked where I live in ohio. They looked all over the truck but once they look under the hood and see there is no sticker saying that it had a cat from the factory, you will be ok. They just passed me through. If I rememeber right the early 99s had cats and the later 7.3s did not. I might be wrong. I just know some did and some didn't.

And yeah the turbo back exhaust kits come with the downpipe. Check out performance truck products. They sell diamond eye exhaust and they are cheaper and have been great so far for me and others that I know.

I bought the truck new, still has the complete exhaust from the factory.

jshalala, I'm from Columbia Station, OH. My buddy has a 99 with a cat....he's the one telling me that I should have one too. Thanks for confirming the possibility that my 02 doesn't have one. Do you know if the e-ckeck techs would frown upon a straight pipe setup?

I'm still shopping around for an exhaust system. At least I know now that I don't need to worry about a cat. Thanks again for the guidance!

My late 99 truck had factory exhaust when I got it and had no cat. My brothers early 99 had factory exhaust when he got it and it didn't have a cat either. Both trucks have MBRP 4" exhaust with mufflers now.

This is what I found. Most autos didn't have cats, only manual trucks and those were mostly the early 99 trucks. If your truck had a cat from the factory there will an epa sticker under the hood. As far as straight piped exhaust I don't think you will have a problem as long as you are running a full exhaust system in the same location as factory. The only problem I think they would have is if you cut if off under the truck and just left it...(like mine). lol in other words get the full mbrp/diamond eye/whatever turbo back exhaust kit and just enjoy the sound
