You know this was All preceded by a conversation with his neighbor who told him, in I'm sure, a pompous, condescending, know-it-all, tone "Guns are used just to kill people and a gun in the home is proven to most likely be used to kill a family member. - I wouldn't have one!"

I've always loved the rhetoric of that anti-gun statistic of the danger of a gun in your house causing death of a family member -vs- an intruder.
If you don't actually Kill an attacker is doesn't count on our side (stopping something by producing, firing, or even wounding doesn't matter)

But the suicide of someone with their own gun counts on their side (the vast majority of "family member deaths" using the most effective tool they have at hand. Like if no gun was available they wouldn't have found another means to end their life....)

It went like this and has many times..... "guns kill people, we would have less crime if we made them illegal."

My responce....."10 x more Americans die in motor vehicles each year than are killed by guns, that includes the war overseas. So we should deal with our biggest problem first and remove cars from our lives and make them illegal, because cars kill people."

Thats when things get good. I get the famous responce "no people who drive drunk and recklessly cause those wrecks not the cars." I respond " guns cant kill without a person pulling the trigger!"

As far as a reduction in crime...criminals dont go buy a gun at your local sporting goods store. Two options here....1 take all the guns away from Americans and stop selling guns to honest hard working Americans and the criminals will be the only ones with guns= more crime. 2. Make sure every American has a gun and criminals will be less likely to steal, rape, rob etc. because criminals pray on the weak.
