Questions about an 03 7.3
Was looking into buying an 03 powerstroke that has 16X,XXX miles on it. I do not know much about diesels. So I was hoping some could help me as far as things to look for when going to test drive it. I was just wanting something that ain't gonna fall apart on me. It's a 6-spd manual.
Any help would be appreciated. |

I'd start by looking in the lifter valley for leaks. Somewhat common (but relatively cheap and easy to fix if you do your own work) leaks aer the HPOP and turbo pedistals. The most expensive leak in that area is the actuator for the EBPV on the pedistal. I would also see if they will let you look at the compressor wheel in the turbo to make sure it is in good shape. If it's not, that is a good indication that the engine might have taken some dust into it and I would shy away. If they won't let you do that....pop the air cleaner lid and take a look in there. There might be a slight oil film, but make sure it isn't dusty/dirty past the air filter. That is what I can think of right off the top of my head.

Look over the oil pan too. Thats an expensive fix and they tend to rust on our trucks.

A good guide right here in the 7.3 "Tech" section -> What to look for when buying a USED 99-03 PSD
