What to Look for in Buying Used Diesel

Potential first time diesel owner here. Going to look at a used '01 diesel with just over 100k miles. Any tips about what to look for, questions to ask the previous owner, things to consider if I should buy it or not?

The truck is going to be used mainly for towing horse trailers with anywhere from 0-4 horses a state or two in either direction (from Ohio), and as an occasional second vehicle 2-3 times per month.

Any tips are much appreciated!

There's a thread on here (I think) with the same title and what to look for.

BUTT!! If your going to be towing in the over 10,000 lb class be aware the Fords were not rated for over 10K bumper pull until 2002.

That's one reason I got a 2002.

Look for oil pooling in the valley on top of the motor on the 7.3's. That is the high pressure oil pump seals leaking. Not a real big deal kind of common and annoying on the driveway. Just one of many things to look for. My 0.2

That is why you get a trailer hitch.
