cooling system refill

What is the correct way to refill the cooling system? I just pulled off the oil cooler tonight and plan on having the truck put back together tomorrow. I just want to make sure i bleed the air out of the cooling system correctly. I havent done it in a long time.

Seems like with my old 5.0L truck i left the rad cap off and keep filling the radiator until the thermostat would open and close and not take any more coolant. thanks for any info or tips
