Oil question on my 7.3

I have a 99 7.3 powerstroke. I went to check the oil today and noticed that I am about 2 quarts low which puts me at the add line. I have run about 4500 miles on this oil change without adding any oil. I was just wondering if this type of oil consumption is normal?

You sure its not leaking any? That is usually a more common issue...

If you aren't leaking any, then that does seem a little bit high. It could just be something like injector O-rings.

Any motor isn't designed to use oil. So it's either burning it or leaking it.

I use just about that much too - 2 quarts in 5,000 miles. I agree, it shouldn't be using any at all but that's not too bad, IMO. Mine does not leak at all. Not a drop. Gotta love that!

Ford consider anything less than 1 quart per 1K is totally normal. I didn't say that I do. But a couple quarts in 4500 could have several reasons. I wouln't add 2 quarts, I would simply do an oil change and keep on trucking. 2 Quarts low is nothing on a vehicle that holds as much as these.

All in all 2 quarts isn't a ton over 4.5k. Where you towing a lot over that span? I would check for leaks and if you don't find any just watch the oil levels...

I ended up doing an oil change instead of adding oil. I switched it over from motorcraft deisel oil 15w40, to rotella t-6 syn. So I will keep an eye on it and see what happens. And yes I tow almost every day. I have a landscape company and am pulling mowers and my bobcat at least 3 days out of the week, so I dont know if that has anything to do with it or not. Thanks for all the input!
