How many miles is to many miles on the 7.3's?

I'm buy my first diesel and wondering how many miles is to many on the 7.3s. I found a 2000 with 260k for $4000. Haven't had a chance to look at the truck but it is inspected motor runs strong, has a solid frame, needs minor body work but that's no big deal.

Thanks,
Adam

There are plenty out there with lots more miles than that. Take it to a trusted mechanic to look it over and go from there.

With a well-maintained 7.3 260k is no big deal.

Is 4000 a good price or should I keep looking?

Check Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, NADA, and see what they say with the options the truck has. That will give you a good place to start. Shoot them a low price, they might take it.

It's all about how it was maintained. 4k seems like a good price if everything checks out. Lower is always better, lol!

If it's a nice 4x4 and at least an extended cab, it would be a great deal.

Mileage is no worry if maintained, as stated above... we just bought an Excursion a few months ago with 243K miles on it, and it's running fine, I went over it closely before I bought it. Even think it's the original trans... the auto trans in these trucks is the weak link, and with that kind of miles, I'd guess it's been replaced, if not, start a savings account for a trans rebuild, I've had my yellow truck done locally for $1500, but others like BTS rebuilds are far stronger, but will cost you around $4000.

Mileage? I've got 220K on the yellow dually, 192K on the red supercab, and we're at 245K on the Ex now... and they all get 12-14 MPG most of the time, I can get up to 16 mpg out of the red truck on the open highway.

Another note... the guy I got the red truck off of about a year ago, he replaced it with a 250K mile truck, up to about 265K on it now, and he's pleased as punch... he wanted a long bed and an auto trans, and got an XLT, 4x4 ext cab, high mileage, rusty truck, for just under $5k.
