7.3 swap/interchange
The original 7.3 in my 2001 f350/6 speed manual has seen better days, I can get a low mileage 7.3 out of a 96 or 97 for a screamin deal. Does any one know for sure if this can be done. Also, anything to know about flywheel/clutch??? Any help would be much appreciated.

should be a easy changeover. the early models of the 7.3 dont have some of the electronics, but the basic engine from heads down tot he block are the same. injectors are going to be smaller. you need to use whatever PCM from the truck in hick you used the injectors.
I am pretty sure the front accesories are all the same also. |

Thanks Nick,
Any idea if the turbo is the same as the one in my 01, also I've been told I will need a fuel pump block off plate, where can I find one? What about the hpop, did ford use one on the 96-97.Thanks |

the 96-97 has the same hpop, your front brackets are the same but the ac end alt are revesed. the turbo is a little different but if you take the up pipes off your 01 motor and use that turbo or the other will work too. the fuel pump is mechanical on the early powerstroke an you can plug that gole with a frost plug, not sure on the size. the 01 has split shot injectors and the obs has single shot so those would hafa b swapped over, and the uvc plugs are different. a little work but if you have them sitting side by side you will see most of the differences.

Turbo is different, PCM is different, Fuel delivery to the heads is different, injectors are different... OBS trucks had 90cc single shots, SD trucks had 110cc split shots, both flow about the same fuel.
IMO i would keep looking for an SD motor unless you are getting this other motor for like $500 or FREE. Then you are just unbolt and swap in. |

OBS motor is fine. But I would just rebuild what you have. Normally ends up being cheaper or very close to same price. And always a better outcome.
