How to distinguish 7.3 from 6.0? Is there a Vin code??

Just wandering if there is an easy way to distinguish between the 6.0 and the 7.3 in the 2001-2003 models? Is there any vin code distiction or something visible in a quick look or?? Thanks

the 6.0 didn't come out until 03. i distinguish between the 2 by the noise of the engine. i don't know if the vin # would tell you anything.

Just at a quick glance the 7.3 had a black with silver letter "powerstroke diesel V-8" tag on the door....the 6.0 had a silver "powerstroke turbo diesel" tag on the door.

They also sound very different...7.3s have a lower note to them, while a 6.0 at idle has a high note to the engine rattle...also the 6.0 sounds like it is prepping for take off when the turbo spools.

badges are easiest. there were a few 03's (i think 03) that still had the black badge. not many, but my neighbor had one. so just a heads up to look under the hood if you come across a questionable 03.

BTW

7.3 has vin code F
6.0 has vin code P

It'll be in the 8th position on the vin.

And sldghmr, ,the vin tells you basically everything about the truck...

On my 03, the vin#'s 8th number indicates the engine type, 6.0 engine by the letter "P".
