I unhooked the waste gate hose on my truck a few times. The problem is that on the top end, the turbo doesnt like it. I had some bad fluttering sounds out of mine. And thats with the Wicked Wheel. I have also used a manual boost controler on my truck and thats much better than unplugging the waste gate.

Are you sure it's opening? If you don't have a chip it is very possible it can only build 15 psi anyways... especially if you had a very small leak somewhere that could drop 1-2 psi.

I bet if you had a chip you would build 20-25 without it opening... I know I can. It flutters though, gonna have to get a WW.

i have a wicked wheel, fully rebuilt turbo, removed intake air heater, removed that cold weather flap on exhaust side of turbo., 140 IDM, high pressure crossover line, gauges, Muffler is removed and its straightpipe, DIY intake,..
this thing is wide open no restrictions.....

The wastegate is mechanical. It should only be opening when it receives enough pressure to push the rod to open it. Assuming it is in proper working order. When you unhook the red line in theory it should never open because it will never get enough pressure from the atmosphere to push it open. On a stock truck you may just not be getting the fuel to push that much boost. Or you could very well have a leak somewhere including your up-pipes which will limit your boost as well since all the exhaust gas isn't spinning the turbine.

WW drops a few pounds of boost so I'm told. I can hit 20+ on any of my settings but stock. Stock is probably around like 17-18 if I stay on it for a while.
