Electronic Gauges / Monitor
So I am looking for an electronic gauge monitor and was wondering what options were out there for the e99. I found the two edge insight models (ct, cts) and a bully dog unit. Just wondered what was the best and what other options there were. Also can these units read my tranny temp on an e99 or do I need a probe to be able to do that?

Just so you know,,,, those things really aren't a replacement for real gauges in Any way...
All they do is to access the PCMs data. You will not get trans temp and exhaust temp because the PCM doesn't (two of the most important things that you want to monitor). They're more "bling" than anything else

I would be using an EGT probe for exhaust temp so it would actually be reading the right temperature. As far as transmission temps I may have to run an actual probe for that as well since I dont think the e99 computer even reads that.

I got ahold of Edge today to see what parameters the CTS would read on my early 99, they said
"Accel Pedal Position, Battery Voltage, Engine Oil Temp, Engine RPM, > Exhaust Back Pressure, Gear with TCL, ICP Pressure, Injector Pulse > Width, Intake Air Temp, IPR Duty Cycle, Manifold Abs Pressure, Time > 0-60, Time 1/4 mile, Trans Temp, Turbo Boost, Vehicle Speed, Waste Gate > Control Duty Cycle" "Those are parameters that your 7.3 liter has available to be read through the Insight product." This is of course without the EGT probe, but I would also want to know if it does in fact read tranny temp and if the readings are accurate? I made sure they knew I had an early 99. Anybody have anything to add to this? |

Sometime in mid '01 a Trans Temp Gauge was added to the stock instrument cluster, if you don't have that (and no '99 did) I don't think there would be a sending unit.
Even if it did, I would be afraid that sender would be as bad as the stock gauge is. All they tell you is a 3-step increment Cold - Normal - Too HOT (and the "Normal" position, where the gauge needle doesn't move at ALL, has an almost a 200 degree range....) You have to decide if you need to be able to monitor such bling as "Pulse Width & Waste Gate Control Duty Cycle" or want real gauges

Yea, I guess it is too good to be true. I think I'm leaning a little towards analogs.

So to do it it looks like you would have to add Edges accessory input and then just put probes in things. Then you would get actual readings like an analog but you would also get anything that the computer can read, Be able to scan your fault codes etc. But i dont know if that system is worth the cost at that point.

They are proud of them. I went ahead and ordered Glowshifts. You can build your own three guage pillar kit and get 10% off with "JUNE11" coupon code. Plus free shipping! Right at 200 bucks! With the money I saved I can buy a custom tuned chip.

what 3 did you go with? EGT, Boost, Tranny? I mean i guess if I want anything that the computer reads I can always hook up my phone since I already have the gauges there....

Yep, EGT, Boost, & Tranny.
