heater core hose leaking

Hey guys, well I have a small leak from one of the heater core hoses, at the firewall. It is the one that comes off of the water pump. The hose new from Ford is way to much for what it is, plus I dont like those stupid little clips.

Can I just go buy some good heater hose, and use that instead? just clamping it with a hose clamp at the firewall size? and what size hose should I get?

Thanks boys.

Figured Id reply my conclusions to this thread, in case someone ever searches and is looking for the same information.

I removed both in/out hoses at the firewall. Cut them a couple inches back, and replaced the stupid quick connects with normal 5/8 heater hose (and barbs to connect to original hoses). Used hose clamps to tighten them down, and they sealed perfectly. Cost me about 15$, as oppose to the right kidney that the dealership wanted.
