quick trans 4r100 help needed bad

I went to pull my tc tonite. Something in there is making noise and vibrating big time. Anyway, the thinn(approx 1 inch diamater) shaft that goes into the trans(imput shaft) is this supposed to slide in and out freely? i would assume something like a C clip should be holding it in? Mine pulls out
thx

No clip, the TC input shaft just goes into where the trans would normally have the tailshaft.

so the 2 feet long or 18 inches or so shaft is supposed to just pull out the front of the transmission at will? no big deal?
