Ok, here
Why the crazy love for the 7.3L ??? I received a lot of great responses... but I see a lot of you guys install extra filters, gauges, etc... I have had my truck about 4 months now and think I understand the need for the gadgets now too!
So far, I have done 2 oil changes. One immediately, and just recently one at 5k miles. Rotella T was used. At this oil change I had Blackstone check my oil. And after reading these forums I decided to install one of those NUC bypass filters while doing this oil change... just like a lot of you guys... The Blackstone report came back with 2 odd items... some sodium, and 4% fuel. TBN was at 7.9. I am unsure of starting TBN of the Rotella. No oil needed to be added during the 5k interval. I plan on doing my next change of oil and both filters at 10k and doing another Blackstone test to see if things change.
Oh yeah, I also bought the 3 gauge Glowshift pod with EGT, Trans temp, and boost gauges... just because. They are installed (except for EGT sender, and I will finish that soon).
Now my last point. I have been doing some reading on coolant. Mine is green, other than that I know nothing about it. Figuring a coolant filter couldn't hurt anything I ordered one of those too. From what I can tell my best course of action would be to totally drain my system and replace the coolant with a known good product, like Rotella ELC. What is the system capacity? And, is there a block drain on these 7.3 engines?
Am I on the right track with what I am doing?
